About the event

WORKSHOP: Ceramic Sgraffito Planter

with Kacee Reed of Sun-Li Studios

Ages: 8 & up

All skill levels are welcome!

Each student will be provided a custom pre-thrown leather hard vase. Our instructor will guide participants in how to use underglazes to properly coat your item in preparation for the sgraffito process. Students are strongly encouraged to pre-plan their designs in advance, but we will have a selection of designs and patterns to choose from too!

What is "Sgraffito" - (Italian: “scratched”), in the visual arts, a technique used in painting, pottery, and glass, which consists of putting down a preliminary surface, covering it with another, and then scratching the superficial layer in such a way that the pattern or shape that emerges is of the lower colour.

Please keep in mind that pottery is a process. The time you will spend in class is for learning beginner/intermediate skills and for doing the carving on your beautiful creations. The pieces you will create during these sessions will need to be bisque fired once your class is completed and they are fully dry, then dipped in clear glaze, and finally glaze fired. This will ensure your wares will be food safe - however, to maintain the longevity of your creations, we strongly recommend handwashing. The anticipated time for the studio to contact you to pick up your completed project is roughly 4-6 weeks from your workshop date.

I understand that classes will not go forward unless the class registration minimum has been meet prior to class start date. Please confirm with the institute that your class has met the registration minimum before purchasing recommended supplies and/or one week prior to start date. Contact the institute at or by calling 706-267-6724.
