WORKSHOP: SoupTEMBER Ceramic Sgraffito Soup Bowl

Friday, September 23rd

6:00-pm-8:00pm

Price Per Person: $55

(Price includes all materials, firing, and glazing)

All skill levels are welcome!

Each student will be provided a pre-thrown greenware bowl. Our instructor will guide participants in how to use underglazes to properly coat your greenware in preparation for the sgraffito process. Students will have a selection of designs and patterns to choose from OR design their own artistic pattern for the sgraffito work!

What is "Sgraffito" - (Italian: “scratched”), in the visual arts, a technique used in painting, pottery, and glass, which consists of putting down a preliminary surface, covering it with another, and then scratching the superficial layer in such a way that the pattern or shape that emerges is of the lower colour.

Please keep in mind that pottery is a process. The time you will spend in class is for learning beginner/intermediate skills and for making your beautiful creations. The pieces you will create during these sessions will need to be bisque fired once your class is completed and they are fully dry (in the greenware state). This will take roughly 1-2 weeks. During your session, your instructor will inform you about our scheduled "glaze day", which is open to all students taking pottery throughout the quarter. You are welcome to attend this session, free of charge to learn about what it takes to glaze your bisqued pieces. Your glazed works will then be glaze fired, which will take another 1-2 weeks for completed pieces to be ready for pick up in their finished state. All works will be microwave and food safe. You are not required to attend the glaze session - normally held on a Saturday - however, if you are not able to attend, the instructor of your session will select the best glazes for your pieces. The anticipated time from the end of your class session for the studio to contact you to pick up your completed projects is about 4-6 weeks from the last day of your session.
